A remodel and addition to an existing WWII-era home, the central challenge of the project is to use a relatively modest addition as an opportunity to radically transform this perfectly ordinary house, giving it a modern sensibility and strong character.

Phase 1 of this project included extending the upstairs living room into where an enclosed porch previously stood. However, the new living room, which boasts spectacular western views, was also a victim of the afternoon sun. Recycled redwood siding, trellises, and translucent shading ‘fins’ unify and warm the western facade, allowing the light and breeze to pour in, but provide shading from the intense western sun.

Phase 2 of this project was creating a master bedroom and bath retreat including doors opening to a private garden. In the new master bath, custom mirrors were placed in front of translucent windows to bring both natural light into the space and gently light the face from the front during the day. The mirrors were positioned high and low to accommodate the differing heights of the couple.
