Internally  I’ve called this project “Mid-century Remodern.” The existing house on the site was built in 1959 and was a forgotten mid-century gem in the Hollywood Hills. We love mid-century charm, but this one had very low ceilings and a crowded floor plan, hence why we “remoderned” it. This project started in 2018, and like most things that happened around that time, it got delayed and dragged an extra 2+ years due to *cough cough*. It was challenging for all parties, but here we are crawling over the finish line in 2022.

Project Brief: Our clients first approached us as a pair of sisters who needed the house to have two primary suites + guest suite for when the family visits for Thanksgiving. They loved mid-century style and came in hand with pictures of Mandy Moore’s recently renovated home in Pasadena (more on that later).

Most of the original house was demolished, but door and cabinet hardware were saved and reused to bring that sense of authenticity. The house was rebuilt with 12′ ceilings and a reworked floor plan. Much like the original house, the new layout has large sliding doors that allow the living spaces and primary suites to overlook to the pool for 24/7 lounging.

What’s Inside: In the living space, the wood ceilings and walnut paneling work together to anchor the space and bring warmth against the white terrazzo floors. The fireplace features a raked cement tile by Concrete Collaborative and custom walnut cabinetry. Towards the dining room, the bar sits back from the new walnut wall and bathes in sunlight from the skylight above.

One primary suite takes direct cues from Mandy Moore’s bathroom and is tiled on all four walls with Fireclay Tile. The muted green tile is complemented by custom walnut cabinet, brass fixtures, and terrazzo floors.

The office and its cabinetry is painted Light Blue 22 by Farrow & Ball for a slick monochromatic look.

Pictures to come of all. For now, please enjoy the in progress shots below.

We we’re so lucky to have clients on our team who took this project on as a personal interior design challenge. Each plumbing fixture, light fixture, tile, finish, etc. was handpicked by them. Thank you Barbara + Elaina for your patience and attention to detail throughout this on-going process!
