When nominated as City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #166, the accessory structure at 1417 Kellam Avenue in Angelino Heights was considered to be the best remaining example of a Victorian-era carriage house in the city. The structure was originally built c. 1877 and had suffered poor remodels through the years.
Our mandate was to maintain as much historic fabric as possible while updating the interiors of the carriage house to meet contemporary standards of livability. To do this, we kept everything that was historic about the property, while creating clear transitions from old to new to allow visitors to read those moments of change.
The exterior was stripped to its natural, warm Douglas Fir. On the inside, the original siding runs vertically while the new runs horizontally.
As part of the project, the backyard was completely remodeled to accommodate a new pool and to create a new series of decks.
